The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) was founded in 1909 and is an organisation of more than 100 national chapters.
The goals of the ILAE are:
• To advance and disseminate knowledge about epilepsy
• To promote research, education and training
• To improve services and care for patients, especially by prevention, diagnosis and treatment
ILAE has national chapters in more than 100 countries with over 15,000 members. Each national chapter has elected officers and members who are doctors and other health care professionals interested in epilepsy. Benefits of joining the ILAE.
ILAE has offices in Brussels, Belgium and Connecticut, USA.
ILAE publishes an official journal, Epilepsia, which is the leading, most authoritative source for current clinical and research results on all aspects of epilepsy.
ILAE holds scientific congresses on a regular basis:
• International congresses every two years in conjunction with the International Bureau For Epilespy (IBE)
• Regional congresses in each of its regions every two years
• National congresses annually by each national chapter
ILAE has formal links with the World Health Organization (for the Global Campaign Against Epilepsy) and with the International Bureau for Epilepsy (the worlds leading lay persons epilepsy association), the World Health Organisation and the International Bureau For Epilepsy. ILAE also conducts, in conjunction with WHO, a global campaign entitled “Out of the Shadows” the aim of which is to increase public and professional awareness of epilepsy, as a universal treatable brain disorder.
